Originally intended as a home turntable, it was quickly christened as the turntable for DJs. The Direct Drive technology made it possible to scratch, which gave the world of Hip-Hop a whole new dimension. Also for the emerging House, Techno and Acid genres, the Technics SL-1200 MK2 was the ultimate turntable.

The MK2 turntable has significant improvements over the MK1. For example, it offers quartz locking, a heavier turntable, lower "rumble," less "wow" and "flutter," and a more refined tone arm. Also, the MK1 version does not offer Direct Drive in the motor, and the MK2 has a more user-friendly pitch control.
